About this deal

There’s a whole world of pillow fillings out there, so we’ve summarised the pros and cons of the various types below. Confusingly many manufacturers 'invent' their own terminology to dress things up to sound a bit more fancy, but the basic synthetic options are hollowfibre, microfibre, and memory foam.

Synthetic pillows are usually made from polyester. As they’re hypoallergenic, they’re great for allergy sufferers and also affordable, lightweight and easy to care for. They’re good if you sleep in a variety of positions throughout the night too. But they aren’t as malleable or breathable as other pillows and they have the shortest lifespan of all pillows – with the filling often prone to clumping. It’s easy to assume this is irrelevant as you’ll have a pillowcase covering it. But it’s worth noting that natural cover fabrics such as cotton have much more breathability than polyester and other man-made fibres, which can make for a far more comfortable night’s sleep if you’re prone to getting hot at night. How we test pillows The medium-density version was well-loved in our tests, but it's also available in soft and firm. On top of that, we love that its outer cover is a cotton sateen with double stitching around the hem to make sure the down doesn't poke through during use.

Front sleepers, also called stomach sleepers, best suit a medium-firm or firm pillow with a low loft to ensure the spine is kept in alignment. Memory foam or hybrid pillows can provide that kind of support. verifyErrors }}{{ message }}{{ /verifyErrors }}{{ The best part is that you don't have to sacrifice quality for sustainability: It earned high scores in both Lab and consumer tests. The pillow kept its shape even after pressure was applied and the outer cover washed well.

If – like me – you had always assumed that the plushest pillows had a natural down filling, the Simba Hybrid will prove you wrong. It feels as soft as the finest goose down but with the support of memory foam (although the Simba is clear that this isn’t a memory foam pillow per se). It never needs plumping, and I found it much better at keeping me cool than the natural-fill pillows I tried. Given that the filling is synthetic, it is also suitable for people with allergies or sensitive skin. Who it's best for: Sleepers who aren't satisfied with typical pillow offerings and want to try something new and innovative. This pillow feels totally different than foam, down or down alternative options. Another issue I encountered with testing other down pillows is a strong, musty smell that lingers long after first use. That didn’t apply to this one. I also noted that there is no sign of the feathers or down poking out through the tightly-woven cover.
