About this deal

After the events of the Fourth Trial, Martial soldiers hunt the two fugitives as they flee the city of Serra and undertake a perilous journey through the heart of the Empire. And his POV parts were so boring. They were all the same. Just Elias's emotional turmoil as he cut down trees or whatever in the forest. Spare me. The last person I’m going to talk about here is Darin, I can’t even explain my thoughts about Darin because he’s just that brother figure! He’s been through it, captured, tortured, freed and then starts to rebuild his life. There’s just something so pure about Darin, the way he acts with Laia, and then his relationship with Elias. Darin takes no shit, people treat him differently because he’s a Scholar and he’s just like nope, and speaks up and defends himself.

What happened in A Torch Against the Night by Sabaa Tahir? What happened in A Torch Against the Night by Sabaa Tahir?

Before they get far, Elias passes out. It turns out that the Commandant stabbed him with a poison-tipped blade. Laia drags him to a healer, but the news is not good—the poison is fatal and Elias only has five months to live. Laia is determined to find a cure, but Elias wants her to focus on her own survival and run far away from the Empire. But love, or the love stories here, never really has a time and place in this book, as with the last one. It is hinted at, it is used to offer strengths in times of hardships...or to further a plot point. But there is always so much more going on for it to be the focus. The characters face horrors, tortures, death, the manipulation of creatures far more powerful than themselves. They discover a loss of control on their personal destinies.Laia of Serra, now allied with the Blood Shrike, struggles to recover from the loss of the two people most important to her. Determined to stop the approaching apocalypse, she throws herself into the destruction of the Nightbringer. In the process, she awakens an ancient power that could lead her to victory--or to an unimaginable doom. Thrilling…Tahir meticulously plots these novels, ramping up the suspense and including plenty of surprises.”— The Buffalo News Some characters showing up… I was like BIIIIIIIIIIICTH! I mean I 100000% knew that one of them low key had to arrive just because but the other I was SO SO SO surprised! Helene figures out that they are going to travel to Nur where Elias’s relatives live. She gathers a legion to follow.

A Torch Against the Night: An Ember in the Ashes, Book 2

What do you like best about fantasy books set in an alternate reality? Does this universe resemble any historical times or societies? But you get my point, I know we're supposed to believe/accept that breaking Laia's brother out of prison is of immediate importance, but I'm frankly skeptical. We don't really get to see a lot of Darin throughout the book so I'm hoping reasoning and motivations will be explored a bit more in the next book.

Just how unexpected things were, like I genuinely had my mouth to the floor at some things that happened, I was just like WHAT IS HAPPENING Elias is haunted by images of Helene, Laia, and Keris. However, because he has joined with Mauth, who has taken his memories, he does not know who they are or why he sees their faces. While Mauth has made most of Elias' memory fade, he has left some memories. One is what happened when first became Soul Catcher and what happened because he did not give up his humanity and emotions. Elias has spent the last few months passing on the ghosts of the Waiting Place and building a cabin for himself to replace Shaeva's that the efrits burned down. He has also turned the now-empty jinn grove into his personal training space. When his thoughts grow unruly and he feels emotions rising, he exercises. He remembers being told that, "when your mind does not hear year, train your body. Your mind will follow." [3] The next morning is graduation. Elias and his friends end up getting into a fight with Marcus and his cronies after Marcus kisses Helene without her permission. The Commandant interrupts the fight, and everyone goes to the school’s amphitheater for the graduation ceremony. After the students are declared graduates, the Augurs make an unexpected appearance. Cain declares the current dynasty will fail and it is time for the prophesized Warrior Emperor to be chosen through the Trials. Elias is chosen to be one of four Aspirants, along with Marcus, Helene, and Zak. Set in a rich, high-fantasy world inspired by ancient Rome, Sabaa Tahir's AN EMBER IN THE ASHES told the story of Laia, a slave fighting for her family, and Elias, a young soldier fighting for his freedom. Outside of the end, this as usual has the same addictive prose as the previous books and a crapton of political intrigue. After Reaper, they're in a pretty bleak space. However, this story offers an ember of hope that builds with the tension.
