About this deal

Easy to apply by brush or roller along the grain of the wood. The primer can be applied wet on wet to penetrate the wood surfaces. Excess primer should be brushed out to prevent the primer forming a surplus film. Hardwoods may require 3-4 coats for the primer to penetrate deep into the grain of the wood. It may also be used on sawn and planed woods.

Below we have listed down the many types of clear primers available and when you should use them. Oil-Based Clear Primer Most oil paintings on canvas or panel are prepared with white gesso and then the whole surface is covered with paint so that you no longer see the white ground. If you don’t want to cover the whole surface of your canvas or wood panel with paint, but instead want to leave small or large areas of canvas or wood showing as part of the painting, then you may want to prime your surface with a clear primer instead of a white one. This will allow the colour and texture of your surface to be seen so that the grey-brown of the linen or the colour and grain of the wood can become part of your painting. I will often harden wood like this as it can make the restoration of a profile far easier than removing the dust and then filling, even though it is a little more expensive. The solvents can take a long time to evaporate from timber in this state if the sections are large. Evaluation by Trial The marine world loves CPES as the cost of replacing timbers in a wooden boat give a significant incentive to ‘Restore not replace’. It’s extreme marine performance will repair structural or cosmetic timbers in many other environments. The main aim of priming is to allow the paint to adhere to the surface better than if you used the paint independently.

When you are choosing a product of this type, there are several factors that should drive your choice. Let’s look at them one by one. Oil-Based vs. Water-Based Modern polyurethane caulks, such as 3M 5200, will bind extremely strongly to Clear Penetrating Epoxy Sealer, as will the hybrid caulk Everbuild Stixall. This capability can be used to very good effect to achieve permanently sealed boat hulls, and permanent flexible sealed joints in timber framed houses etc. Smiths CPES is now manufactured in the UK Creamy, foamy, didn’t spread as far as expected. Took time to get it to brush out to cover the same amount as the others on the wood. Michael Harding Clear Primer is the least stiffening. The area with the primer folds over just as softly as the area of linen without primer.

The first step you must get right when looking to prime your cabinet is choosing the suitable primer for your project . On badly rotten timber, which you can crumble to dust with your fingers, you will typically use 2 or more times the volume of rotten timber in CPES to harden your wood dust. You will however end up with a piece of plasticised wood that you could beat someone to death with. If that is the case, it would be best to apply the second coat of primer once the first coat has dried. When the temperatures are less than 45 degrees Fahrenheit, these primers can take up to 48 hours to dry well. Water Based Primer This one has earned its reputation, and that is not something to ignore. It may not be anything fancy, but you can be pretty sure that this product will do its job. The cost per gallon is reasonable, as well. Smell Many primer products will offer special advantages that are meant to be used as selling points. While many of these advantages are legitimate, we would advise you to read carefully and make sure they aren’t trying to pass off a standard feature as a bonus. Effect of two coats on stretched linen, then sanding, then a third coat: Benefited. Smoother, very slightly darker, less wipeable.

You should go for two coats when priming a stained wood, a surface with a dark painting, new drywall, or metal. How Can You Make Primer Dry Faster?Shabby Chic’s multi-surface sealant/clear primer for wood that can be used with acrylic or water-based paints. Shabby’s Chic Clear Sealant Primer can be used with both interior and exterior paints. Four of the primers sealed the canvas enough with one coat that there was no oil penetration through the canvas (primers 2, 3, 4, and 10). The other seven ranged from very slight penetration to a moderate amount. They all were sealed perfectly after a second coat. I also show an example of the oil halo you get on unprimed linen. Clear Primers are very important to increase the longevity of the paint and also to make sure that paint doesn’t get scratched or peeled off easilym by increasing the durability. They also help to stop the wood tannins from bleeding out into the top coat. Oil-based primers guarantee the user good coverage and effectively prevent stains from seeping through the surface of your newly coated structure.

Creamy. Spread farther than Liquitex. Took time to get it to brush out to cover the same amount as the others on the wood, using a damp brush helped. Should you wish to mix Smiths CPES by weight the ratio is 98 parts of A to 100 parts of B.
