About this deal

Potter had long wanted to develop a book of nursery rhymes, but such a project left Warne cold. Rhymes were already well represented in the firm's catalogue, and Warne felt Potter's unbridled enthusiasm for the genre would make the project a headache for him. In the past, he had tried to discourage Potter's interest in rhymes, believing her own stories superior, but she persisted. He reluctantly agreed to a book of rhymes for 1905, but Potter did not have it ready at the end of 1904, so he accepted the tea party tale instead. [5] Early in 1905, it was decided the book would be published at the end of the year. [2] Cupboard Love by Briton Riviere depicts Potter's cousin Kate. The work was parodied by Potter in the illustration of Duchess searching Ribby's cupboard for the mouse pie. [6] When Ribby came out for a pailful of water to wash up the tea-things, she found a pink and white pie-dish lying smashed in the middle of the yard. I am feeling very much better, my dear Ribby," said Duchess. "Do you not think that I had better go home before it gets dark?"

This original, authorised version has been lovingly recreated electronically for the first time, with reproductions of Potter's unmistakeable artwork optimised for use on colour devices such as the iPad.M. Daphne Kutzer, Professor of English at the State University of New York at Plattsburgh at the time of her Beatrix Potter: Writing in Code (2003) believes The Pie and its two immediate predecessors (the tales of Two Bad Mice and Mrs. Tiggy-Winkle) are transitional works in Potter's life and literary career. All three books confront the meaning of domesticity, work, and social hierarchies while exhibiting an underlying discomfort with the unyielding strictures of Victorian domesticity, and a disengagement from the broad political and social concerns of her earlier books to the more narrow political and social concerns of working farmers and rural people. [21] I will come very punctually, my dear Ribby,” wrote Duchess; and then at the end she added—“I hope it isn’t mouse?” Duchess was watching and waiting for her to leave. When Ribby was out of sight she rushed into her friend’s kitchen. She opened the door of the top oven. ‘How odd!’ she thought, ‘Why hasn’t Ribby started baking her pie?’ Oh yes, yes! Fetch Dr. Maggotty, my dear Ribby: he is a Pie himself, he will certainly understand.” The tale is set up like any classic tale loved by many children. What I found interesting was that the relationship between the characters was not fixed in the end, both characters just simply learned the truth on their own and what they may do better next time. However, I did notice that the cats solution to the problem was to not invite a dog to a party in the future which may not be the best example for young readers.

Oh what a good idea! Why shouldn't I rush along and put my pie into Ribby's oven when Ribby isn't there?" And then she thought that did not look quite polite; so she scratched out "isn't mouse" and changed it to "I hope it will be fine," and she gave her letter to the postman. She sat down before the fire to wait for the little dog. "I am glad I used the BOTTOM oven," said Ribby, "the top one would certainly have been very much too hot." Dr. Maggotty hopped so fast that Ribby had to run. It was most conspicuous. All the village could see that Ribby was fetching the doctor. The Tale of the Pie and the Patty-Pan (originally published as The Pie and the Patty-Pan and not known by its current title until the 1930s) is a children's fantasy story by the British author and illustrator Beatrix Potter. It was first published in October 1905, in a larger format than was normal for Potter's children's books. Then Duchess had an idea: ‘I have a pie ready to go into the oven, too,’ she thought. ‘It’s a ham pie, so much nicer than mouse. And it has a lovely crust held up with a little tin patty-pan. When Ribby goes to buy her muffins,’ continued Duchess, ‘I will rush along and put my pie into her oven when she isn’t there. She won’t know the difference!’
