About this deal

This is very common with these smaller practice amps. The same criticism is often levied at the Line 6 Spider range. All the time and effort goes into cramming it full of features, but not bothering to make the speaker actually sound adequate. This is usually the reason why I tell people to save a little longer and buy a Boss Katana 50, which has a ton of features and houses a decent 12″ speaker. Note: The Mustang I and II models never had the FIZZ issue, so the only reason to buy a v.2 over a v.1 for those models is for the new effects or amp models. If you are a beginner first getting into electric guitar, I highly recommend this amp. Out of all the beginner practice amps I have seen, this one is so far my favorite. It has allowed my students to not only start out with a great basic tone but allowed them to learn about different effects and learn to tweak their tone to their liking. The quality of the tones seem to be much higher than other similar modelling practice amps and for the price, it’s great value.

Overall, the modeling technology and the ability to connect the amp to a PC makes this a handy amp for first-time guitar players and for intermediate guitar players looking to learn about digital recordings and effects. The amp allows users to save 24 presets directly into the amp. For example, there are 12 factory presets written into the FUSE software. It means you can plug the amp to the computer and save up to 36 presets. If you don’t plan on using the Fender FUSE software or wouldn’t know how to do it, this amp is not a great choice. You won’t have many effects to play with and, in all honesty, you might not like the original presets and voices.

Tech Specifications

Controls of the Mustang are intuitive and easy. It has no menus, no screens, and no complex issues to scroll through.

Electric guitar beginners and kids will find an awesome, fun, and budget-friendly device, and I highly recommend this baby as your first amp for guitar. There are 17 modelled amps available which range from vintage Fender amps such as the ’65 Twin Reverb to British and American style amps. As with most modelling technology, you will probably find around 3-5 amps you like the sound of and the rest will suit styles you’re not very interested in. Almost all players will find amps that fit the style they want to play. Out of all of the practice amps I’ve seen, this is my favorite. Not only does it offers a great variety of choices, but it does so in an easy manner. Even though USB connectivity seems like the common thing to do, this is an extremely rare feature out there, although it shares the feature with the Boss Katana modeling amp series. There are 24 fully customizable factory presets that can all be accessed right on the amp. There are three banks of eight presets. You can see which bank you’re on by looking at the color of the LED light. Green = bank 1, Orange = bank 2, and Red = bank 3.The existence of the port also tells us the Mustang I is designed as a practice and experimenting amp. It means you can get more out of it by using its full features. The controls on the Mustang are knob-driven and on top of the amp. It has a single knob each for Gain, Volume, Treble, Bass, and Master. The Preset Select has a preset that you can dial through, and some effects are under master headings called Modulation Select and Delay/Reverb Select. The amp models light up individual LEDs for each model type. The control panel features a Treble knob to control the high frequencies and a bass knob to control the lows, but there is no Middle knob to control over the mid-range. It may seem a bit confusing at first. However, you will get used to it in no time. With the Fender Fuse software, you can also put any preset on any slot regardless of what amp name is next to it on the amp. So it’s completely possible to fill the entire amp with just ’65 Princeton Reverb presets if you wanted to.

Just from the name Fender, you know you will be getting a quality product. Moreover, the Mustang I V2 amp has a pretty good reputation in the guitarist community as a solid choice for home practice and gigs. But the quality of this 20-watt Mustang amp is a nice surprise. The effects are also of very high quality, decent enough to belong on a DigiTech multi-effects pedal or individual budget stompboxes. The Fender Mustang I v.2 is oriented towards the beginner player looking for a quality 20-watt practice amp. Loaded with 24 factory presets including a wide array of amps and effects, a beginner can easily find a sound to base their personal tone on. It’s incredibly easy to use, and the Fender Fuse software is very easy to work with. Wefinally have a modelling amp has had the common sense to include a USB port to connect to a PC/Mac. Modelling amps have been around for years and while amps have been very reluctant to include a USB port, multi-effect pedals have been including them for years and it works really well (see the review on the Line 6 HD500X). Fender FUSE If you’re looking at a Mustang III, IV or V, then the answer is yes. This is due mostly because the v.1 versions of those amps had a bug that is know as “FIZZ” among their grumpy owners. V.2 solves the FIZZ problem. The preset selection is made up of eight amp models, each with three presets for a total of 24 presets in all. You can directly save 24 presets on the amp, but you can also use the Fender FUSE software to add another 12 presets. Overall, you can save up to 36 presets. As an amp suitable for beginners, the range of effects and presets it offers is huge, compared to other models. Amp Model If you’re planning to use the FUSE software and already have some experience editing music, this is a great option for you.

None of this matters if it doesn’t sound great, and unfortunately… that was our biggest gripe with the Fender Mustang. The quality of this amp surprised me. I’ve heard quite a few budget amps before as my students often bring their amps into lessons for me to explain how to use them. Quite often the tone sounds cheap (eg: I have vivid memories of hearing the then-new Marshall MG series and the ridiculously horrible sounds it spat out). The quality of this amp was a pleasant surprise. The effects were actually very high quality and very surprising. Quite often budget amps have poor sounding effects that feel very digital. The effects with the Mustang were actually very usable. Popular guitar pedal effects include chorus, delay, reverb, overdrive, distortion, and fuzz. Downside & alternatives Seventeen high-quality Fender and other amp models including five new ones, such as ’57 Twin and ‘60s Thrift; 24 onboard presets (unlimited storage with computer); a full palette of effects including reverb, delay/echo, tremolo, phaser, with additional new effects including Big Fuzz, Green Screamer and pitch shifting (with even more available through Fender FUSE); new low-noise power amp platform; chromatic tuner; USB connectivity for user programming and audio recording output; auxiliary input for media player; Fender FUSE application for deep editing, preset storage, patch swapping and free artist content; Ableton Live Lite 8 Fender Edition studio-quality recording software compatible with Mustang USB recording output; AmpliTube Fender LE edition with free Fender FUSE editor/librarian software for Mac and PC (makes Mustang ideal for guitarists new to digital recording).Peavey Vypyr VIP 1 – 20 Watt Amplifier, a New Kind of Modeling Amp There are modeling amps, and then there is the Peavey Vypyr VIP.
