About this deal

Outdoor Research should need no introduction. A fantastic company based in Seattle on the West Coast of the USA, they have continuously been at the height of innovation and quality since their inception in the early 1980s. Foil blankets (sometimes referred to as thermal blankets, space blankets or emergency blankets) are a lightweight mylar and aluminium covering commonly used by hikers, outdoor athletes, surgeons and first aid responders to keep the wearer warm in specific situations. They work by reflecting the wearers body heat, trapping it inside the blanket. Green Elephant says the bags will decompose in 3 months in an industrial composter or 1 year in a home compost. Although you can sleep in just a bivvy bag, it’s generally a pretty unpleasant experience – both should be used in combination. In all but the warmest weather you would feel uncomfortable and cold without a sleeping bag once the sun has gone down. A bivvy bag (also called bivi bag) can be described as a tent-like bag. It is basically just a waterproof bag that you and your sleeping bag would slot into. ) Bivvy bags are often constructed using lightweight waterproof material (usually a nylon), with a breathable top.

It’s no-frills, but no-frills is sometimes fine if the bag is light and protective, and that’s certainly the case here.

As Rab’s cheapest and lightest bivvy, this is well suited to campers looking to ditch the tent for the first time. The Trailhead is crafted from hardwearing 40 Denier ripstop nylon with a breathable yet waterproof polyurethane coating on both its top and base. This durable combination ensures that any rain is kept at bay, while a zipped mesh vent enables appropriate ventilation. All seams are taped, completing what is an impressively watertight product. The standard LNT practices were developed and promoted in the 1970s and 80s after National Park visits dramatically increased from around 3 million (1958) to 20 million (1967). At 20 million, the impact noticeably threatened the wilderness. Today the number of annual visitors exceeds 300 million, but leave-no-trace recommendations have changed very little. What can I say.. I love this tent!! All in, it's 350g heavier than my Pro1, and for this lil bit of extra weight, I get loads more room, more headroom, 2 doors, 2 huge vestibules, and 2 layers, so that I'm not soaking myself on the condensation from the outer. It also has lovely taped seams (no seam-sealing, hurray!) and while I've only had it out in a light shower I don't foresee any random puddle issues.. but I won't speak too soon 😄 ripstop nylon with PU coating / fluorocarbon free DWR / 10,000mm hydrostatic head / 10,000 MVTR / taped seams / snap opening and stiffened peak. The good news is, we’ve put the hours in and found the best bivvies 2022 has to offer. When does a bivvy bag turn into a one person tent, and does it matter? Our answer is “when it uses two fibre glass poles rather than one or a separate fly sheet”, but no it doesn’t matter.

One of the things to be aware of is that while some bivvy bags will position themselves as being breathable, it can be difficult to have a fully breathable and fully waterproof bag. I'm able to cook in the vestibule in the rain, without water getting inside the inner or wetting my sleep system Carefully lift the sides of the liner bag so contents can get to the bottom. Use the straps to cinch the bag closed.

These contain chemicals that make the human waste inside inert, so they are safe in normal dumpsters. Home made WAG bags or bags without the EPA commercial rating can only go in designated human waste dumpsters, which are located at the trailhead. The tent didn't budge at all and felt like a perfect lil safe haven - exactly what I wanted for winter in the mountains :) Those managing National Parks and Public Lands are unable to protect the land and for this reason they promote LNT education to encourage people to be better voluntary stewards of the outdoors. Education and awareness are thought to be the best methods, partly because regulations can’t be enforced and people resent rules and often retaliate making the rules counter productive. With the standard leave-no-trace guidelines failing, it is worth considering how we can do better. Here are some LNT 2.0 suggestions: In our experience, the external bag (which admittedly, was never designed to hold human waste) opens too easily, such as when stored with gear. Still, we've never had an issue with the internal bag or the outer bag–the ones that actually hold waste. On some routes, you can expect a ranger to hand you a blue bag when you are issued a permit. If you want a better experience, bring your own WAG bag. Some popular ones (see photo above) contain a large main bag with odor-reducing powder that turns liquids into solids. They also include another bag to seal in the main bag. The toilet paper included is a bit skimpy, so bring some extra. One thing we really like about the Biffy Bag is it has the biggest antibacterial wipe of any of the bags we tested and ample toilet paper. Low weight and a compact shape are the most important factors for runners, since a bulky or heavy bag makes running feel awkward and also more strenuous. Is a bivvy better than a tent? The powder is an odor neutralizer, puts a sealing layer around the waste to seal in odor, and turns liquid into a solid. That is why you add the Biffy powder into the bag before you do the deed. The Biffy bag itself doesn't have corners to ensure equal distribution of Biffy powder.

Bring lots of extra pegs, or some super-hardcore pegs or ground anchors that won't easily be pulled out of the ground Radiation heat loss: Radiation is the normal process through which the body gives off heat, usually occurring when the air temperature is below 20°C. Double-bag wag bags have a two-layer design that helps to prevent leaks and odors. The inner bag is designed to hold the waste, while the outer bag provides an extra layer of protection. Some brands call themselves a “triple layer” waste bag because they count the gel that deodorizes and solidifies liquid as a third layer. Double-bag wag bags and triple-bag wag bags are often used in areas where there is a high risk of contamination, such as on mountaineering expeditions or in areas with fragile ecosystems. Portable Toilet Kits: Using a bivi bag can be a little like wearing a waterproof parka coat in the winter. The bivi wraps around your sleeping bag and includes a big hood which can completely cover encompass your head and face.Even though they’re all lightweight, some are even lighter than others. This is usually due to whetherthey have a hoop (and therefore a pole).
