Using the capacity of two 3-cell batteries (one of which is removable) the X240 held its own on our battery rundown test, lasting almost six hours (5 hours 54 seconds). The Dell 6430u (HD+) lasted 5:10 and the Dell e7240 Touch lasted 7:21. However, replacing the 3-cell battery with the slightly bulkier 6-cell battery resulted in a record-setting battery life of 15:16, the equivalent of two full work days. Even during our life-like tests, the CPU appears to have a hard time. During the CPU video conversion test with Cyberlink's MediaEspresso (multithreading), our test device even fared worse than the Dell Latitude E7240 with its nominally weaker Intel Core i5-4200 CPU. Then again, during an audio conversion test with iTunes (singlethreading), the world looks like a brighter place for the ThinkPad X240, allowing it to take the lead when compared to its ULV competitors, reaching 48.7 times the base speed. However, if you wish to retain the original colour of your sleepers, we recommend that you retreat your sleepers by applying a stain/preservative or varnish before the original colour fades. Continue this retreatment annually to maintain that colour. Pressure treated with Tanalith E for a longer life and Tanatone for a warm, brown colour (for details of this treatment, please see 'Specification' below). Sleepers also look wonderful as edging for vegetable gardens, parterres, patios, paths and driveways. Steps can be created very simply with sleepers, as can raised beds and retaining walls. Or get creative and use our sleepers to design a themed garden or to make garden sculptures.

In idle usage, the average temperature for the upper side is 27.6 °C / 82 F, compared to the device average of 30.7 °C / 87 F. In our 9 measurement areas, we have measured a peak brightness of 327 to 361 cd/m², yielding an average maximum brightness of 339 cd/m² and a brightness homogeneity level of 91 %. When set to minimum brightness, the display yields just 4 cd/m². The adjustment can be done in precise steps up to step 12 (128 cd/m²). The following three brightness steps cover the rest of the range, with step 13 already yielding 178 cd/m² (the value which we chose to use for our Wi-Fi battery life tests) and step 15 climbing all the way to peak brightness. We'd have liked to see more steps in the vicinity of 150 cd/m² which is an important range especially when the laptop is used indoors. The X240 managed a playable rate of 31 frames per second in "World of Warcraft" with autodetect settings, but that rate dropped to 17 fps when we turned the special effects up. Those numbers fall slightly below the 39 / 20 fps category average. The Dell Latitude E7420 notched 20 fps at its standard 1920 x 1080p resolution, which is higher than the X240 we tested. The ThinkPad X240 stayed pleasantly cool throughout our testing. After streaming a video for 15 minutes, the touchpad measured a comfortable 81 degrees, the keyboard a pleasant 92 degrees and the bottom a reasonable 93 degrees. We consider temperatures below 95 degrees comfortable.

The X240's 256GB SSD allowed it to boot Windows 8 Pro in a speedy 13 seconds -- quite a bit faster than the 20-second category average and a little faster than the Dell Latitude E7240 (17 seconds). The drive took just 36 seconds to complete the LAPTOP File Transfer test, which involves copying 4.97GB of mixed media files. That's a transfer rate of 141.4 MBps, which is well above the 104.9-MBps category average but a bit short of the Dell Latitude E7240's 164.2 MBps rate and the 242.4 MBps offered by the MacBook Air 13-inch.
