About this deal

It's an odd film from Duvivier, whose movies often celebrated the unseen hand of fate, leading men to destruction. Yet in this movie, everyone knows who they are and what is important, even if they disagree fiercely. So the old teacher rails against stupidity and hopes for a pension; the young lovers re-enact Romeo and Juliet; and the communist brings his newborn child to be baptized as Giuseppi Stalin. Don Camillo is a character created by the Italian writer and journalist Giovannino Guareschi, whose name, and some of his character, is based on an actual Roman Catholic priest, World War II partisan and detainee at the concentration camps of Dachau and Mauthausen, named Don Camillo Valota (1912–1998). This movie begins with the town in an uproar. It's a heavily divided town and the Communists have just won the election for mayor. The old guard is quite unhappy and the unhappiest is the town's priest, Don Camillo (Fernandel). And, through most of the film, he and the Mayor butt heads and fight like dogs. It's all quite silly but enjoyable. Giovanni claimed that the voice from the crucifix was merely the voice of his own conscience, but in the stories, it is a living reality which enables solutions so simple that they are beyond the reach of political minds clouded with ideology and the need to win.

Don Camillo and Peppone - Wikipedia

Don Camillo: Mondo Piccolo = The Little World of Don Camillo (Don Camillo #1), Giovannino Guareschi Last fall my mom brought up a series of stories she used to enjoy with my grandfather when she was young - "They were about this Italian priest in a little village, and the communist mayor who was his enemy, and they would fight all the time - they were funny." Peppone and his comrades are sometimes seen at odds with the city-based Communist bureaucrats, who are sometimes seen as "barging in" and trying to dictate policy to the local Communists without knowing the local conditions. This is paralleled by Don Camillo sometimes coming into serious conflict with his Bishop, on one occasion a case of flagrant disobedience leading to Camillo being exiled to a tiny village high in the mountains; however, the Bishop is soon forced to reinstate him at the strong demand of his parishioners (including the Communists). a b "La classifica dei film più visti di sempre al cinema in Italia". moviplayer.it . And I want to urge everyone to seek out the books and read them, either before or after seeing the movies. Especially read "Comrade Don Camillo," which is the only complete novel of the series. As the author notes in the preface of the first book, not the Christ, but "his" Christ, the voice of his conscience. The film was the highest-grossing film in Italy of all-time [6] and is currently the seventh most watched Italian film at the cinema with 13,215,653 admissions. [1] The Little World of Don Camillo. Giovanni's message is that what works at the micro level of the Little World can be made to work universally, the world over.
