About this deal

While the plot was fun overall, i do think the Trials aspect could've been better. I expected them to way longer and a little more... exciting. the actual story felt a little overwhelmed by the romance and the world was also barelyy developed at all 🫤🫤 Only the extraordinary belong in the kingdom of Ilya . . . The exceptional. The Elites. The Elites have possessed powers for decades, gifted to them by the Plague, while those born Ordinary are just that, banished from the kingdom and shunned from society. i was hooked from the beginning to the end. the plot was so entertaining and even though i haven’t seen hunger games, i need to watch it after seeing many people compare this book to the movie ( series? idk really)

The Powerless Trilogy by Lauren Roberts - Goodreads

The Elites have possessed powers for decades, gifted to them by the Plague, while those born Ordinary are just that, banished from the kingdom of Ilya and shunned from society. No one knows this better than Paedyn Gray, an Ordinary posing as a Psychic to blend in with the Elites. When she unsuspectingly saves one of Ilya's princes, Kai Azer, she's thrown into the Purging Trials, a brutal competition showcasing the Elites' powers. I liked the characters. They were okay? I mean I like my heroes either tall dark and mysterious or sweet with a golden retriever energy. Kai was neither. He was just a charming flirty chill dude. I mean he was okay, just didn’t stand out to me. Paedyn was an okay heroine as well. I liked her. The tension and banter between them was so enjoyable to watch. also finally a strong mc who isn't annoying half the time and making stupid decisions just for the plot. yay !!) This was a really enjoyable fantasy romance!! 🤩🤩 super fast-paced and easy to read, major Hunger Games vibes and the romance had SO MUCH chemistry 💜💜🫶🫶 The characters are nothing new. Take whatever recently published fantasy book dubbed as a ‘TikTok book’, and you will find the same 2D, boring, plain characters.

This was a good decent book. it was just that I’ve seen it all before? I mean it’s really a strong debut with a solid storyline and interesting characters and world building. However, it’s the kind of fantasy book where you could guess every single thing that’s going to happen in a typical YA fantasy book. It didn’t add anything if you get what I mean. It has enemies to lover trope. It has tending to wounds trope. It has the ‘who did this to you’ trope.” Okay, but what’s the book about? What is the book trying to accomplish? What makes it different from all the other books out there with similar tropes? Wow. I just want to say that I have been with Lauren since the being of her TikTok. I watched almost every live and I remember the day she said, “I’m gonna write a book.” It’s truly inspiring to see her hard work and creativity pay off. i thought the writing was wonderful! honestly an amazing debut. the pacing, the storytelling, the romance, etc, i really enjoyed. i LOVE that it was dual pov and that the chapters were almost equal between the fmc and mmc. AND THERE ARE MULTIPLE BALLROOM EVENTS <333 love that in books. the banter was so good, i could read it forever. THEY REALLY DO HAVE CHEMISTRY Lauren Roberts is a new author, thus I don’t want to judge her with the same standards I judge books by experienced authors since Roberts still has room to improve. That said, I also don’t want to not speak my mind since Goodreads is one of the few places I can be completely honest. So I’ll try to be nice while keeping my words true.

Powerless by Lauren Roberts | Waterstones

Wow. What a debut. I read this in 2 days and I'm dying for the sequel. The romance, the angst, the ending... YES. the writing wasn’t bad, but the typos were. though they don’t detract directly from the storyline, noticing one always pulls me out of a book a bit. hire a new editor lauren, you deserve better!!! 🩶 Please be aware that the delivery time frame may vary according to the area of delivery - the approximate delivery time is usually between 1-2 business days. So here's the thing. There are two wolves at war within me. One is like "let authors have fun and write what makes them happy" and the other is "there is a certain expectation of quality from a published novel that people are paying real American dollars for". The first part is why I don't really want to leave a review, and feel mean for doing so, and the second part is why I am leaving a review. Only the extraordinary belong in the kingdom of Ilya . . . Red Queen meets The Hunger Games in the most epic and sizzling fantasy romance book of the year.

Kai Azer is now Ilya’s Enforcer, loyal to his brother Kitt, the new King. He has vowed to find Paedyn and bring her to justice. If the Trials and the opponents don’t kill her, the prince she’s fighting feelings for will if he discovers what Paedyn really is . . . completely Ordinary. Perfect for fans of Sarah J. Maas, this young adult fantasy follows the forbidden romance between a powerful prince and an ordinary girl as they try to survive their kingdom’s grueling laws pitting them against each other. Also... I will say that I'm a fan of the Young Elites and that worldbuilding is similar but has better tangible impacts on the world. A lot of the time in YA fantasy worldbuilding will only be a precursor to plot without actually shaping the world). (ALSO. The fact that the desert was right next to the city and forests and shit was so funny to me like that's not how topology works at all). (ALLSOOOO this is so tiny I'm sorry but the fact that they have bananas in this setting just makes me believe that there was some equivalent of the Banana Wars in this fantasy world. and i'M sajifodjsof).

Powerless Trilogy (2 book series) Kindle edition The Powerless Trilogy (2 book series) Kindle edition

This book was veryyy unoriginal 😬 I've heard it was inspired by Red Queen and the Hunger Games and this felt a little TOO similar to those. It's not anything particularly new ngl 🤷‍♀️🤷‍♀️ Remind me to to make you smile like that again, when you aren't dying, and I have all the time in the world to memorise it.” ~ THIS MANN Ironic that her bright teal hair matches her name. I’d never seen the young women who conducted the interviews for the previous Trials, but I’ve heard enough about her unique appearance to identify her.” The book is needlessly long, with self indulgent scene after scene that served little purpose to the plot or to further character growth. Yes, I know they're fun to write. But it became very repetitive and very boring very fast. The tropes are fun, knife to throat and whatever etc etc, but I have to wonder why there are like 4 different instances of it and why they're almost identical in purpose and tone. And, what's worse, they're very telling rather than showing. The author needed to kill some darlings, kill MANY darlings. My only issue was with an element of the worldbuilding. It was simple enough to understand the history behind the Elites and the Ordinaries, but I couldn't wrap my head around the purpose of the Purging Trials. Maybe that was the point, because Paedyn didn't seem to understand it either. If they were celebrating the Plague and the magical powers it gave the Elites, why try to kill a bunch of your own powerful people in the process? In The Hunger Games, the poor fight to the death for the rich's entertainment. I had hoped for the concept of the Trials to evolve and strengthen throughout the story.kai azer is my new favorite book boyfriend. he gives off such a tristan dugray vibes ( if you know you know :)) and i’m literally living for it. i’m just so in love with confident, flirty and effortlessly funny men who are not scared to show interest. and he was it all. literally he is THE standard. If the Trials and the opponents within them don't kill her, the prince she's fighting feelings for will if he discovers what Paedyn is... completely Ordinary. Be swept away by the first in the romantasy trilogy taking the world by storm. There were a couple typos in the book- it definitely could have been edited better. That didn't really affect my rating or enjoyment but just know that before going in.

If the Trials and the opponents within them don’t kill her, the prince she’s fighting feelings for will if he discovers what Paedyn is . . . completely Ordinary. this one was truly meant for those who love romantic fantasy, it had every element that you yearn for! I am a die hard fan of the forbidden love trope & this one definitely hit the mark. Pae & Kai were to die for. I was unbelievably obsessed with every interaction between them, the tension & banter was so fulfilling and perfect for those that love rivals to lovers & emily henry banter! Both the plot and writing were also pretty good!! 🫶🫶 I really enjoyed the writing style and how easy it was to read, it made the book FLY by. There were also some seriously gorgeous lines that had my jaw on the floor. it was really good writing for a debut!! 😍😍 The plot was very entertaining and fast-paced. There was minimal worldbuilding and it was very easy to understand, so this is a great book if you want to get into fantasy! 💜💜A great debut in my opinion. For this being Lauren’s first book, I was impressed. It has a solid storyline and great characters. Overall, I really enjoyed it and can’t wait for the story to continue. Only thing that was missing for me personally that would have brought this to a 5⭐️ would have been found family, true friendships being built. If I kiss you—really kiss you, like how I've wanted to, how I've waited to—should I expect a dagger at my throat?" All this said, Lauren Roberts’s writing has the potential to be good. There were times when I enjoyed myself. For example, when Kai woke up with the note,
