About this deal

The cost requirements show a number of ‘bubbles’ showing the exact number of different ally races required, including one ally type that must be used, plus a number which is the minimum total value of allies required (the illustrated rules do a much better job of explaining this, it is simpler than it sounds!). Washing over all of that is some really excellent visual design. All of the symbology is very clear and understandable and the artwork is attractive and worth more than one look. Furthermore, there's a color code attached to both Allies and Lords; the former by race (Seahorses are yellow, Squids are blue, etc.) and the latter by guild (Merchants are green, Soldiers are red, etc.), so it's easy to remember which sets will work with the greater sets that they're purchasing. It also provides an easy reminder of how the Council, made up of Allies not taken in Exploration, can be a solid option if there are multiple purple Allies (Jellyfish) and, likewise, a number of Mage Lords waiting to be recruited. The level of complication is presented by the choices to be made and not by the rules themselves, which is why I think the game is so approachable by both gamerz and the norms. Even more importantly, it's a set collection game that actively encourages interaction between players. This isn't just a tableau-builder where you spend the whole evening staring at the six inches directly in front of you. You have to pay attention to what others are doing before they spoil your plans and the drafting action, of course, is one of the crucial moments in that whole approach. Request support from the council - As ally cards build up in the council, it can be an attractive option to take a pile to boost your hand of allies. Strangely, there is no disadvantage to doing this, no price to pay, it would have possibly felt more in theme if you had to ‘bribe’ the council with a few pearls to gain their favour. Final Score: 4 Stars – A great set collection game with some amazing artwork and solid mechanics. This one makes its way to my gaming table often. The cost of each lord in Abyss is shown in the bottom right corner. There will be a number which is the total strength of allies required and the colour that must be used surrounds this, there may also be pearls indicating the number of additional factions that will also need to be used to pay for swaying the lord. I think theme wise that you pay these jellyfish and seahorses for the lords to eat, which is kind of rough, but the lords do look like they would eat them.

P.S.: If anyone has an experience with the expansions for this game, I’d love to hear your opinions in the comments! Simple things first, the value is the number of influence the lord is worth, with some lords also worth keys that help to control locations. Powers range from instant hits (e.g gain one pearl), to continuous effects (e.g reduce your recruitment costs for lords).

The Lords you can recruit may give you special powers/abilities and may also provide a key. Collect three keys and a player can take control of a territory. Losing the powers of the Lords. Once a player controls their seventh lord the end game is triggered. A Leviathan is Coming Any Lords used to control that Location lose all their Powers for the rest of the game, but still have their influence points. The game ends as soon as someone finishes their pyramid, then all players score their points. For each colour, you score points equal to the largest valued card in your pyramid. Additionally, for each colour, you look at the largest grouping of cards in your pyramid and you score 3 points for each of those cards. Whoever held the pearl majority card at game's end scores 5 points for it. Whoever has the highest score wins. As soon as a player has three keys in their possession, either the keys shown on recruited lords, or keys gained from defeating monsters, they gain control over a location. Each location is represented by a hefty rectangular board, showing a scene from the ocean floor, and detailing how best to use it to score influence. You may perform this action as many times as you want (as long as you can pay and there are empty spaces).
