About this deal

Now that you know a little more about some of the best torque wrenches out there, it’s time to figure out which torque wrench is right for you. Not only that, but too many people get an excellent torque wrench only to ruin it because they don’t know how to care for it properly.

Torque is a large topic and we put together a mini-series this year to supplement this guide and provide even more information on the subject. First is the maximum torque value. At 80 ft/lbs it’s high enough for most DIY jobs, but there’s certainly a chance you’ll come across a job calling for higher torque specs. Second, it’s not the most durable option. An assembly compound such as grease or anti seize etc is often recommended by manufacturers when assembling components and tightening bolts. We also spoke to torque wrench manufacturers and got some great expert information and advice on looking after your torque wrench and on torque itself. Torquing a bolt is a simple process with the bits slotting in nicely to the bolt heads. The bits seem to be well made and I can't see any wear on the S2 steel bits.

A torque wrench eliminates any doubt and confirms your components won't be damaged or vibrate loose on your bike. In the event of a warranty issue, you'll also have a stronger position. How do I find the torque rating of a part? Slipping Torque Wrench: Slipping Torque Wrenches disengage or slip once the pre-set torque is reached, preventing further torque application. Still, even after considering all this you really shouldn’t get this ¾” torque wrench unless you need the higher torque values. It’s not because it’s not a high-quality torque wrench though, it’s because the larger size significantly drives up the price. Although we were initially sceptical of the design, the torque tester proved the Ocarina to be the real deal. At just 88g, it’s perfect for travel purposes. And it’s also why it takes quite a bit to earn our nod as the best ½” drive torque wrench. This ACDelco ARM601 torque wrench is an outstanding mix of price and quality. While it’s far from the most affordable option on our list, it’s a great value considering it should last a lifetime.Despite the quality of that piece, that's not where your money goes. Instead of those pieces, what you are investing your money in is three torque limiters. They aren't adjustable but they do match up with the three most common specs you'll find on saddles, seat posts, and stems. If I'm being honest, I have rarely used these with the included handle. The handle doesn't have storage for all three and, given how small they are, I'd rather not choose only a single option. Even with such praise, it’s priced at a premium and doesn’t offer a great deal over more generic Taiwanese options. It’s certainly one for those who appreciate both form and function. For the same reason, you also want to be sure to release the tension on the wrench before storing it. Leaving the wrench spring in tension during storage will cause it to move out of calibration over time. It only takes a moment to set the wrench to the lowest setting before storing it and it will make sure you get the most precision out of an expensive tool.

It’s not that we think the extension will affect the final torque spec, it’s just that all it takes is for you to get a little off-center to get an errant reading. If you use it properly there shouldn’t be a problem though.Breaking Torque Wrench (or break-over torque wrench): features a pivot point or hinge which ˈbreaks overˈ when the pre-set torque is reached. This allows the handle to move or rotate indicating that the required torque has been applied. The most controversial topic surrounding torque wrenches is whether or not extensions affect the torque specs of a bolt. While we tend to agree that if you use an extension correctly, it shouldn’t affect the torque spec of a bolt, we still try to play it safe whenever possible and avoid extensions unless we absolutely need them.
