In Magical Kitties Save the Day, one player — known as the Game Master (GM) — has a very special role. They describe the world in which the magical kitties live to the other players and, when the kitties take action, they use the rules of the game to figure out what happens next.

Now that you’ve (hopefully) figured out this detailed problem system, the game gets into creating adventures. It gives you a number of really solid Adventure Recipes that are basically lists of story beats. These include things like the Boss Rush, Five Scenes, A Simple Mystery, The Raid and Rescue Operation. Each of these basically gives you a formula that you can fill with problems, foes, challenges, roleplaying, and more.

The GM sets a difficulty number that ranges from Three (easy) to Six (Extreme) and you roll your dice. Each die that meets or beats that difficulty number is a success. Character creation is fast: every kitty needs a Power, Talent, and Flaw. Create your own magical kitty or roll dice to choose your attributes randomly. Since Magical Kitties Save the Day is an all ages game, everyone should be able to join in the play and have fun. Magical Kitties Power Up! also includes new rules for any series, including thirty-six brand new powers plus new bonus features for the powers you already love. The table gives you more room to write a single-digit number for your player’s kitty’s attributes than it does to write in information about each kitty’s Human and those Human’s Problems. If you’ve been looking for a way to introduce your friends and family to roleplaying games, Magical Kitties is the perfect game to do it!

Here we learn how to be a Magical Kitty, which sets the tone and expectations for all the players. This includes a number of rules like, “You must keep your magic hidden from humans. You want to help your human. You can understand humans but they can’t understand you.”, and the fact that you have a special spot in your home the humans don’t know about that will let you come and go without being noticed. The sturdy, high-quality GM screen featuring Magical Kitties artwork and important game info for the GM. Some of you might be balking at this: The core audience is six to twelve year-olds and you want them to understand how to read non-standard percentile dice? When you want to attempt an action, the GM will set what rolls are considered a success. For something that is very easy, maybe you only need to roll a 2 or higher to complete your goal. For something challenging, maybe you only complete it if you roll a 5 or higher.

Vital Stats

Next, we have the Supporting Cast section, filled with a number of important River City characters. Instead of featuring adventure hooks, all of the Human Cast members listed here have their Human Problems detailed. Along with this, there is a random chart for these humans that your group can use during character creation if they want their Kitties’ humans to be ones featured in this setting. I thought this was a smart touch. Note, not all the cast members listed are humans, you’ve also got characters like Beep-Bop the Squirrel with connections, the visiting Queen of the Ice Giants, and some very enigmatic talking books. The cheat sheets also don’t include what I refer to as “character option chunks” (for reasons discussed here). In other words, you won’t find the rules for character creation here.
