About this deal

Written with great intensity and rare candor, Greenlights is a whirlwind of wisdom that's as singular and fervent as its author. Read the book, experience the behind-the-scenes adventures, then pursue your own greenlights full throttle. Then there was him saying that stealing is not bad unless you got caught (he got it from his parents), come on you're 50 year old and if you think this is right then there is something seriously wrong with you. Matthew did well in high school, where he played sports, got straight As, dated pretty girls, and was voted most handsome. If you're looking for insights into his movies you won't find any here. He just lists most of them, more interested in his life experiences. He's like a playful pup that doesn't want to be tied down and runs away to avoid being bored. It's fun to read about his decision to drive an RV around the country and his settling in Austin, Texas. I admire his belief in God, his somewhat conservative nature, and his very pro-life stance in wanting children. He hopes to give his children an opportunity to find what they love to do, work to be great at it, pursue it, and do it. P.S.: 10 Goals in Life

One negative reviewer I read complained that this was “self centered” … well yeah, it’s a memoir. If you like McConaughey, you will likely find this to be an enjoyable book; he comes across as a vibrant, charismatic man who loves life. Part memoir, part guide to life, part collection of extracts from diaries the actor has been keeping for decades, Greenlights by Matthew McConoughey is an insightful and intimate exploration of one southern boy’s journey to stardom. Born to ‘twice divorced and thrice married parents’, I loved reading McConoughey’s honest account of being raised in a turbulent household that was peppered by violence, love and humanity, I loved reading about the time using mink-oil as acne cream went horribly wrong, about the time a stolen pizza that led to a concussion, and about an ill-fated lawsuit that his father never forgave him for. Matthew McConaughey is a self-proclaimed optimist. It’s refreshing to see the perspective of someone whose glass is so full. You have to know who you are before you know what you want to say. Knowing who you are is the base that everything else comes from. You know who you are when you become independent enough to believe your own thoughts, and become responsible for your actions, believe what you want, and live what you believe. Live what you believe! Part Three: Dirt Roads and Autobahns: July 1989A brilliant book to start the new year with, and one that is as inspiring as it is entertaining, I’ll end my review of Greenlights with one of my favourite quotes, “Reach beyond your grasp. Have immortal finish lines and turn your red light green because a roof is a man-made thing.” Greenlights Summary I listened to the audiobook, and Matthew is a cheerful narrator who giggles and laughs when he's amused by some aspect of his tale. It shouldn't surprise you that this book is good, but it will surprise you just how good it is. Wise and entertaining, this is an inspiring memoir and how-to from one of the great outlaw philosophers and artists of our time.' - Ryan Holiday, author of The Daily Stoic What you'll get are some the wonderful interjections of laughter and a few "wooo"s to let you know that Matthew is a genuine human being, very humble of his own fame. Even better, he's very intelligent. There are many passages that can teach everyone a lesson on a number of topics. Micro review: 'Greenlights' by Matthew McConaughey". The Times of India. Three things that will give you clarity, remind you of your mortality, and give you courage to live harder, stronger and truer. The sooner we become less impressed with ourselves and everything in our lives, the sooner we get more involved and get better. We must be more than happy to just be here. Greenlights is many different books at once: an entertaining autobiography, a delightful adventure story, a very funny comedy, a wise self-help guide, an inspiring argument for love and family, and a candid tale of spiritual and personal discovery. I cannot recommend it highly enough. Matthew McConaughey on His Memoir Writing Process: 52 Days Alone in the Desert (Without Electricity!)". People. August 12, 2020 . Retrieved October 21, 2020. I hope to give my children an opportunity to find what they love to do, work to be great at it, pursue it, and do it. Matthew held out, though, and eventually starred in movies like The Lincoln Lawyer, Mud, and Dallas Buyers Club - for which he lost about 50 pounds to play an AIDS sufferer. Matthew won an Oscar for Dallas Buyers Club in 2014.

I like to find out about an author to better understand their perspective. Turns out I am about a month older than McConaughey, we were both raised in the south (him in Texas, me in Tennessee) and we both liked watching the Incredible Hulk in the 70s starring Lou Ferrigno. Our high school experiences were similar, hell, my best friend in HS could have been Matthew. Ahhhhhh...I am totally listening to Matthew McConaughey! ❤️ Holy crap! So there is something to be said for a memoir where the author reads you their story. You all know the voice...but do you know the story? His not-quite-memoir offers a smörgåsbord of life lessons, anecdotes . . . It would be hard to finish the book and not warm to its author. Matthew decided to leave law school because he didn’t want to miss his twenties preparing for the rest of his life. The first time he met his wife, his behaviour was creepy. I had a hard time believing that a successful actor could not arrange a car to drop the lady to her home.

I've been in this life for fifty years, been trying to work out its riddle for forty-two, and been keeping diaries of clues to that riddle for the last thirty-five. Notes about successes and failures, joys and sorrows, things that made me marvel, and things that made me laugh out loud. How to be fair. How to have less stress. How to have fun. How to hurt people less. How to get hurt less. How to be a good man. How to have meaning in life. How to be more me. Greenlights is exactly what you’d expect a memoir from Matthew McConaughey to be like, and that’s pretty great. I thought this was such a great read, but don’t go in expecting a tell-all: he has nothing to say about any of his costars or collaborators. And that honestly was fine with me, because I wouldn't expect him to be that type of guy. There are points when he talks about lying and says that he was raised that it doesn't matter if you tell a big lie, as long as you believe it and it helps you, who cares and that's his personal choice but my thought on that throughout the book was what my parents taught me, "once a liar, always a liar" and "don't retell a lairs tale" so why was I reading one? To me this could have been a great story that he embellished and concocted and those are fine for bar tales but this is a biography and after he said that, it just didn't come off as honest to me.

Well that guy at that age is this book. So if you’re 15 years old, it might be profound, or life changing, or inspiring, or attractive, or something to cherish, or even tell your best friend about, or anything more than this arrogant-stew served with undeserving smug confidence. Greenlights is, as he puts it, “fifty years of my sights and seems, felts and figured-outs, cools and shamefuls. Graces, truths, and beauties of brutality. Getting away withs, getting caughts, and getting wets while trying to dance between the raindrops. It’s a love letter. To life.” After graduation, Matthew put off college for a year to be an exchange student in Australia. There, Matthew was placed with an 'insane' family as a sort of joke (those Aussies have an odd sense of humor), and this section of the book is hilarious. There are some pieces of good advice, like standing firm with your decisions to forego the easy paths while you wait for the right one. I’ve been a McConaughey fan since he appeared as Drew Barrymore’s boyfriend in the movie Boys on the Side. Aside from his obvious aesthetic gifts (I saw him once in person during his dirty, shoeless days in Austin and he was still totally magnetic) and his acting talent, I’ve always thought him to be one of the bluntest, funniest, most cerebral celebrities out there. (Look up his Oscar acceptance speech on YouTube to see what I mean.)

Diaries & Calendars

A rambling book with great stories but flawed execution. McConaughey was a C student in college, claiming he was normally an A student but wanted to devote time to real world instead of books, and at the end of this books says he'd rather "take an experienced C over an ignorant A any day." Well, this book is a C at best and could have been an A if he would have been less self-satisfied and allowed others to guide him to objective conclusions. Instead it's all about subjective Matthew living his life only as he wants. There were a few points where I cringed, I didn't love him and his brother screwing around feigning blindness with a hotel manager as the butt of the joke. I didn't love his get out of jail bongo tale, too many people don't get that privilege.. I dont know, maybe those would have been funny stories if I liked the rest.. probably not, just not for me I guess.. Your Blog post has allowed me to enjoy Mr. McConaughey’s book the way I really need to enjoy it. THANK YOU. and thank you to Mr. McConaughey, MATTHEW for being brave enough to share his experiences because it is bravery to look at your life, laugh at your life, share your best and worst experiences, and ultimately laugh at it all because life is really a big joke. The things that drove us in to rages like Matthew’s stay with the Dooleys, or a bad relationship with a co-worker, later in life, if you are wise, are absolutely laughable and we all should wake up and see them as a ridiculous practical jokes that hopefully have helped grow and be better, humane, compassionate, empathetic people. From the Academy Award®–winning actor, an unconventional memoir filled with raucous stories, outlaw wisdom, and lessons learned the hard way about living with greater satisfaction.
