About this deal

When she was ten years old she arrived in Holland as a WWI refugee, and it was there that she later met Otto Frank and became employed as a secretary at his spice company, Opekta. As I read this book, in my mind's eyes, I could see and feel what it must have been like for them all. It was winter -- always bitter in Vienna -- December of 1920, and I was bundled up in whatever my parents could find and taken to the cavernous Vienna railway station.

Some terminology that may be used in this description includes: Edges The collective of the top, fore and bottom edges of the text block of the book, being that part of the edges of the pages of a. I recently watched “A Small Light” on Disney+ and was so intrigued by the story of Miep and the others who worked so hard to keep the inhabitants of the secret annex safe. Like thousands of unsung heroes of the Holocaust, they risked their lives each day to bring food, news, and emotional support to the victims. On 30 July 2009, the Austrian Ambassador to the Netherlands, Wolfgang Paul, presented the Grand Decoration of Honour for Services to the Republic of Austria to Gies at her home. She did not tell anyone, not even her own foster parents, about the people in hiding whom she was assisting. Some were officials, some were clergy; others were citizens of countries who united in their efforts to protect Jews. Miep's courage has been recognised with awards and medals from countries and international organisations. Miep Gies - her original given name was Hermine - was born in Vienna in 1909, and sent to the Netherlands after World War I as part of a program for children suffering from malnutrition. Our quarter was a quiet area of South Amsterdam known as the River Quarter because the streets were named after Dutch and other European rivers whose lower courses flowed through the Netherlands to the sea, like the Rhine, the Maas, the Jeker. Gies’s book gives a real sense of what it was like to live under enemy occupation when it was impossible to trust anyone.

My Stay in Holland was to have been for three months, but I was still weak by that time and the doctors extended it another three months, and then another. I sort of got the sense that, remembering as much history as I remembered about that period, that Miep and Jan, I had no idea they were still alive,” says Ms Gold, now 77. Miep was spunky, stylish and trendy, happily reporting in her autobiography Anne Frank Remembered — cowritten with Ms Gold — that she was one of the first girls in Amsterdam to learn the Charleston. Across the way was a little grassy playground, and on the other side of the playground was a Roman Catholic church whose ringing bells punctuated the day and sent birds flying against the sky: sparrows; pigeons, which were kept on the roofs; gulls.

It might reasonably have been supposed, however, that at this hour in the day there was nothing substantial to add to the story. To prevent the Opekta workers from becoming suspicious, Gies tried not to enter the hiding place during office hours. He who saves one life, it is as if he saved an entire world' The Holocaust will be forever numbered amongst the darkest of days in human civilisation.

For the millions moved by Anne Frank: The Diary of a Young Girl, here at last is Miep Geis’s own astonishing story. For over two years, Miep Gies was one of the people tasked with helping keep eight Jews safely hidden in the secret annex at the building where she worked during German occupation of Holland in the Second World War. Many, what I didn't know was how Ann and her family came to be in the Attic and who would sacrifice so much, their lives, to hide them.We walked through a town, past buildings that had very different shapes from those of Viennese buildings I had seen. After years of reading other histories and memoirs of the holocaust then hearing of Miep Gies` passing I heard of this book.

Miep and Jan Gies, icons of goodness who sheltered Anne Frank, were never willing to have their entire story written until they met Alison. Also, I didn't realize that there was more time between their capture and the end of the war; it was more lengthy than I thought.
