About this deal

The electronic pinpointing feature assists users in precisely locating the target, making it easier to dig in the right spot. This is where I came across bits of metal no larger than a teardrop, with solid signals—and that means a very sensitive machine. The trouble with the coin settings is that it’s usually looking for metal coins and it’s not well optimized for coins made out of alloy (newer coins).

Detect History is a metal detectors reviewing site created for detectorists, treasure hunters, and gold prospectors. My guess would be that the motion discriminate mode has an audio boost employed to ensure that those deep signals are heard and not missed when hunting.Surprisingly shallow targets were in abundance, and every detected target was a valuable 'keeper', so Galina and I did not have to waste time on figuring out what level of Discrimination or Sensitivity to use. pinpointing with a Garrett can be interesting It seems like after you make a sound from a target then push pinpoint and if you hear the constant threshold then you can zero in. Quite often you can see the opinion, that as the power supply voltage decreases, the metal detector sensitivity/detection depth decreases as well. When you are metal detecting I think this option won’t affect you if you are in US or UK, so you don’t have to worry. I tested out the Garrett ACE 250 over a few weekends to see how easy it was for a newbie and how well it performed.

I didn’t want to take the paper instruction leaflet out so some memorisation was required, though to be fair, it’s fairly intuitive once you’ve grasped the basic set-up and the machine can be used straight out of the box on its factory pre-sets.

An electronic pinpointing system is used, which helps to offer better accuracy for any piece of metal detected.

One more thing from practical experience with the Minelab Go-Find… I’ve paid attention to such fact: when the Go-Find 20 signals that the batteries are discharged (it has such feature), these very batteries appear to still work in the ACE 250. I got used to the occasional false hit and could tell quickly if it was false or not because it wouldnt repeat. The ACE 250 screen, in my opinion, is not contrasting enough (may be I need to give it a good scrub? It eliminates signals from the lower end trash such as tinfoil and iron nails, yet retains the nickel-range signals while also rejecting most pulltabs.Jewelry mode knocks out the first two discrimination segments and thereby eliminates signals from small iron and thin foil. Sarah’s role as chief editor at DIY Garden is about more than just making sure we’re literally dotting the i’s and crossing the t’s (although she’s a stickler for detail, so it’s certainly about that too!

If I happened to be a newbie right now, I would have myself recommended this best budget metal detector to myself. It meant I could piece the machine together and head straight outside, which is the whole point of metal detecting – no one wants to spend their weekends reading a manual! It has become a standard option for newbies who are still learning how the metal detection game works. Thanks to Garrett's microprocessor controlled electronics and a well thought-out design, the Ace 250 can hunt at the push of one button. For a metal detectorist with over 20 years of experience, the ACE 400 is an excellent machine for coin and jewelry hunting! Sometimes, when a good sound came through mixed with an iffy one, a slow, careful sweep could separate junk near a good coin. It’s a beginner’s model but it has plenty enough features to keep you interested for years, even experienced detectorists would find this a productive machine because it finds metal just as it’s supposed to.
