But Cressida keeps throwing new characters and dragons at us; more than making up for plot predictability. I liked how Hiccup used his language skills, the humor when someone else tried to speak dragonese (without success), the evolution of the relationship between the boy and his father and the nice change of scenery with the Romans (a romanced one of course). Still, there isn't much by way of character development and so on, so older readers might start to find themselves a little bored. I really love this series because the author gives you a great love for the characters, threads a great yarn, and foreshadows a lot throughout the book.

But before reading this I suggest reading the first and second book (this one is more necessary to read before reading the third) or parts of the story may be hard to understand if the first couple are not read. The books are relatively harmless, I suppose, though the genders stereotypes are rather a bore until Kamakaze turns up.I loved the introduction of new characters from other tribes and the ridiculous ways that Hiccup solves problems. When Hiccup's dragon Toothless is captured by Romans, only Hiccup and his friend Fishlegs can rescue him. Unbeknownst to Hiccup, Alvin had planted a Venomous Vorpent within the pages of his book, and it stings someone. Hiccup's memoirs look back to when Hiccup was just an ordinary boy, and finding it very hard to be a Hero. This book is about Hiccup going fishing with Fishlegs intending to raid a ship for their latest pirate lesson.
