Customizable actuation (not customizable reset) is something we’ve seen in other analog keyboards, like the Wooting Two. You can also find this feature on the SteelSeries Apex Pro OLED, but its SteelSeries OmniPoint switches aren’t pressure-sensitive. The Razer Huntsman V2 offers stellar gaming performance. I tested it across multiple first-person shooters, RPGs, and even took a respite in Final Fantasy 14 before sitting down to draw my conclusions, and there simply wasn’t a case when the keyboard was less than ridiculously responsive. The added layer of programmability afforded by Synapse also allowed me to keep custom keymaps and onboard profiles for individual games, so I didn’t have to go hunting through settings before launching and diving into a game. I don’t consider myself a competitive gamer, but in both Call of Duty and Battlefield, the Huntsman V2 had me feeling nimble and ready to react. A better option would have been to provide detachable cables and two additional ports to prevent unnecessary connections running across the desk, though you could connect the cords together with a zip tie to tidy up the appearance. This also means you can't use custom coiled cables for a cleaner look, which might disappoint the keyboard modding community.

Premium design touches come in the form of an aluminum top plate sitting atop the plastic bottom and doubleshot PBT keycaps that look as good as they feel. If you look very closely, there’s a subtle finish to the top plate that provides a mild shimmer that matches the effect brought on by the keycaps’ visible texture. The keyboard’s overall finish is clean but not fingerprint-proof. With Razer’s analog optical switches, light travels down a triangular opening in the switch’s stem. That opening widens as you press a key. A photosensor in the switch reads how much light is going through that triangle and makes an analog signal in line with how much light is detected. Adjustable Actuation Points Razer's signature customizable RGB lighting illuminates the underside of the keyboard itself and accompanying wrist rest when connected, as well as the keys and media controls. The lighting options can be adjusted or synchronized across other Chroma-integrated products in the Razer Synapse software. According to Razer, unlike with its 8,000 Hz mouse, there are no PC spec requirements or recommendations for using the Huntsman V2’s max polling rate. “The number of mouse inputs for 8K are much more demanding than that of a keyboard, given that a mouse needs to constantly give information about the location of the mouse and a keyboard is either pressed or not pressed. Because of this difference, there are no usage or power consumption differences between the 8K {polling rate] in the Huntsman V2 compared with other optical keyboards,” a spokesperson told Tom’s Hardware.Even if you’re not playing a game that supports our review focus’ analog features, there’s a potential advantage to be had in the Huntsman V2 Analog’s customizable actuation points. The most popular linear switch, Cherry MX Reds, have a 2mm actuation point, 4mm total travel and require 45g. Since you can set the Huntsman V2 Analog’s switches to have an actuation point as low as 1.5mm, your fingers can have 0.5mm less to travel to register an input. On top of that, the reset point is also customizable, so you can really get the feel you want. Actuation force is greater than Cherry Reds though, with the Razer switches ranging from 54g with 1.5mm actuation and maxing at 74g. This is a very legitimate difference, and so an 8,000Hz polling rate in a mouse absolutely makes sense. With a keyboard? Honestly, not at all. Synapse lets you store countless profiles on the app, and up to 4 profiles on the keyboard itself so you can bring them to another PC without Synapse. However, RGB settings and functions that require Synapse don’t carry over.

Taken as a whole, however, the Huntsman V2 Analog is an exceptionally good gaming keyboard. The key switches feel smooth and responsive, and the analog functionality doesn't impact how the keys actually feel at all. The added resistance does, however, and I would consider these some of the best feeling keys I’ve ever used in a gaming keyboard. The extra key weight also helps when learning how to use its analog functions. Feeling natural and comfortable while keeping a key pressed, say, halfway, will take some getting used to though. Since these switches are linear, at first it felt challenging to maintain just the right amount of pressure to achieve the amount of acceleration I wanted with my car. The camera transitions to series of buttons and dials at the top right of the keyboard. Graphical overlays appear across them, highlighting the various commands they can be mapped to.
The keyboard performs like a champ, but falls short of its acoustic goals – at least on the linear switch version. Ironically, this seems to be because Razer was too successful with its sound dampening foam and silenced switches. The foam cuts out hollowness and reverberations throughout the case, but in doing so reveals all of the extra rattle from the stabilizer wires beneath each key. Razer claims its manufacturing methods allow for the “thinnest font possible on a doubleshot PBT keycap.” There’s light bleed in between the keys and a lot of light reflecting on the button of the FN row particularly at max brightness. But you can curb this by reducing RGB brightness. Analog Gaming Experience One of Razer’s greatest advantages is its peripherals’ long feature lists. The Huntsman V2 isn’t so expensive just because of its optical switches. It also has a lot of gaming functionality, like on-the-fly and software macro recording and programmable keys. With Razer’s Synapse software, keybindings can automatically launch with a specific game or other app, and you can program every key to have another function when right FN is pressed simultaneously. Don't believe me? Let's do the math: The world-record for words per minute is 216 (set in 1946 by Stella Pajunas on an IBM electric typewriter), which translates to about 54,000 keystrokes an hour, 900 keystrokes a minute, or 15 keystrokes a second.

The Huntsman V2 Analog has a fake leather wrist rest that’s also RGB-ready. To set it aglow, all you have to do is plug in the keyboard and magnetically attach the wrist rest to the keyboard. It’ll metallically snap on securely, and thankfully, doesn’t require plugging in an extra cable to light up (like the Huntsman Elite does). With a mouse, you can see the cursor glide across a screen, and the higher the polling rate, the more often the mouse's position on screen gets updated (assuming you have a monitor with a fast-enough refresh rate to take advantage of those extra data points).

Text appears: The Razer Huntsman V2 is a fantastic keyboard: great looks, smart design and performance to say the least. The braided fiber cable is also there, all the way to the left side, (making it easier to snake behind your best gaming monitor stealthily than the centrally located cable in the Huntsman Elite). And while there’s no USB passthrough port or RGB wrist rest, the wrist rest has been updated from the Huntsman Elite. There’s no longer a plastic bezel going. Instead, it’s plush from edge to edge. With the retiring of Razer’s original optical mechanical keyboards, the Razer Huntsman and Huntsman Elite, the new lineup makes sense. Media keys are such a handy inclusion, so it’s nice to see such lavish ones on the mid-priced Huntsman. Overall, this is a premium keyboard, from its build quality and smooth switches, to its keycaps and programmability.
