The book is arranged in chapters in the enticing colours of the rainbow starting with red through to indigo and violet and even beyond. Then the layout of the text is quite original: each chapter covering one of the seven colours of the rainbow. The introduction explains what light is and how the human eye perceives it, and as well as the ROYGBIV colours, there are sections on black and white, fluorescence, infrared and ultraviolet, and an explanation of how some animals can see in the dark. Does the book contain anything that teachers would wish to know about before recommending in class (strong language, sensitive topics etc. Both Sheila Kanani and the illustrator Liz Kay are to be congratulated on producing such an absorbing and enjoyable read.

Liz has provided illustrations for Time Out, Radio Times, Walker Books, Pearson Education, Conde Naste, Oxford University Press, Quality Chartered Institute and Lonely Planet amongst others. Before that she spent 25 years teaching in Essex where she worked as a teacher and part of the Essex School Improvement Team as a Literacy Consultant; before finally becoming Headteacher of a Primary School. Puffin has produced an excellent non-fiction volume which young people will not be able to put down. Dr Sheila Kanani is a space cadet, with her head high up in the clouds, even though her feet are firmly on planet Earth.

Each subsequent chapter concentrates on a particular colour so you can easily pick whatever colour sparks your fancy. Interestingly, too, the primary colours of light that humans can see are red, blue and green – and when you mix green and red light they make yellow! Each question is explained clearly, with lots of added information and ‘did you know’ sections to keep the reader engaged.
