About this deal

Be patient when interacting with your new tancho. Tancho koi fish are intelligent and can recognize familiar faces over time. By spending regular quality time observing them, they will become more comfortable with your presence. Tancho koi should not have any markings on the head aside from the red spot if entering into competition, with the exception of Tancho Showa, which can have Sumi on the head. Some judges may make an exception if they feel that it somehow balances the fish more, but typically it’s regarded as an inferior trait.

Our process is simple. We select the Koi in Japan, we ask for a 50% deposit to secure your Koi. If you have a heated pond, you are welcome to take your Koi after the quarantine process has finished (8 weeks from arriving in the UK at our facility). If you are un-heated, we over-winter the Koi for you free of charge until the Spring! Be sure to research the species you plan to keep together to ensure they have similar temperature and water quality requirements. Given its reputation, Jerry Huff, an American branding expert, recommended it as the international logo of Japan Airlines, after seeing a representation of it in a gallery of samurai crests. Huff wrote "I had faith that it was the perfect symbol for Japan Air Lines. I found that the crane myth was all positive—it mates for life (loyalty), and flies high for miles without tiring (strength).” [49] Korea [ edit ] The crane is carved in a South Korean 500 won coin. a b c "Red Crowned Crane Summary". What’s fascinating about tancho koi fish is that there are different variations and patterns for this distinctive red spot. Some may have a perfectly round spot in the center, while others might have a more elongated shape. There are even tancho koi fish with heart-shaped spots or irregularly shaped ones that lend even more uniqueness to each individual.

As a gesture of good will and peace, these colorful, specially bred carp were most often gifted to those with political and economic power. This is how they initially made their way to Europe and, eventually, the Americas, becoming beloved pets now known widely as “koi” rather than symbols of power and wealth.

The judging of Tancho, as with any koi, can depend on the location and the judges themselves. For example, in Japan where koi keeping and competitions are a distinct part of their history, judging can be more subjective and some judges may have some bias based on bloodline. For example, it’s possible that a judge in Japan may ignore some physical characteristics if they recognize an expensive or old bloodline. So a fish may lose in Japan for being less expensive due to coming from an “inferior” bloodline, but could win elsewhere based on other factors. Klenova, A. V., Volodin, I. A., & Volodina, E. V. In China, the red-crowned crane is often featured in myths and legends. In Taoism, the red-crowned crane is a symbol of longevity and immortality. In art and literature, immortals are often depicted riding on cranes. A mortal who attains immortality is similarly carried off by a crane. Reflecting this association, red-crowned cranes are called xian he ( traditional Chinese: 仙鶴; simplified Chinese: 仙鹤; pinyin: xiānhè;"fairy crane" or "crane of the immortals""). The red-crowned crane is also a symbol of nobility. Depictions of the crane have been found in Shang Dynasty tombs and Zhou Dynasty ceremonial bronzeware. A common theme in later Chinese art is the reclusive scholar who cultivates bamboo and keeps cranes. Some literati even reared cranes and trained them to dance to guqin music.
