About this deal

I was so looking forward to this book, as I really enjoy watching Ardal on TV and think he is a brilliant actor, comedian and also seems such a down to earth guy, but I really struggled to get into this book, just felt a little all over the place and seemed to jump all over the place. If you have ever sat in front of a peat fire in an Irish country pub, nursing a pint of Guinness or perhaps a glass of Jameson’s, listening to the resident shanachie weaving a magical spell with a long, meandering and enthralling tale from local folklore, you will have an idea of what reading this book is like.

Joanne, a local reporter, remains convinced Sandra, with whom she went to school, didn't just disappear.Funny, tragic and deliciously readable, Brouhaha confirms Ardal O’Hanlon as a novelist of the first rank. In the fictional town of Tullyanna, which reportedly bears more than a passing resemblance to O’Hanlon’s home town of Carrickmacross, Co Monaghan, Dove Connolly has blown his brains out, while Sandra Mohan went missing years beforehand. There is a fair bit of violence and abuse in the book, and while not gratuitous (or horribly graphic), it is something I can usually do without. I’ve been a fan of Ardal’s , since his days in father Ted and his other roles in the BBC Comedy My Hero and the drama Death in Paradise. The political intrigue, which also abounds through book is handled deftly considering the minefield it was back during the tenuous early days following the Good Friday agreement.

Accept there isn’t much mystery on account of the murderer being the IRA guy introduced in the first chapter (and this is obvious throughout the book). Having the gift of the gab, also allows the country to produce is fair share of comedians, without the ability to prattle on for ages in front of an audience, you’d be like a certain French clown. Now no longer in the force, he continues to go over what he knows (often reciting facts and possibilities to his infant grandson, Paul), still wanting to work it out. However a local journalist wrote an expose of life in the area and made conclusions about Sandra's disappearance.
