About this deal

As would be expected the image is notably dimmer but apparent sharpness was still good at the 56x magnification. Then somewhat fortuitously, later on in the day, we had a huge thunderstorm and the sky went very dark and I obviously took the opportunity to compare the views through all the binoculars once again. In low light conditions the other model didn’t perform at the level I expected though in regular daylight conditions it is notably brighter than the Bresser.

The BRESSER S-Series 8x42 is a roof prism binocular with a magnification of 8x and an optical aperture of 42mm. For one, there is what appears to be a retention ring behind the objective cell which is not painted black. The twist-up eyecups allow you to easily adjust the distance between the ocular lenses and your eyes. The armor is mat black and feels like some kind of hard rubber with a silvery-grey focus knob and diopter setting to the right oculair, even as the ring at the right oculair, all seemingly made out of some kind of lightweight metal. Whilst the Bresser Condor 8x42, 8x56 as well as the 10x42 models have a larger light-gathering power, that is especially useful in dusk or dawn conditions giving you brighter images. Many binoculars can feel this way but in their case it can be partially attributed to the weight of the binocular. There is also a small plastic ring underneath the focusknob (probably for some protection) that sometimes sits in the way and feels a little bit cheapish.

The forums are dedicated to wild birds, birding, binoculars and equipment and all that goes with it. All Nautic series models are waterproof (Immersion tested at 1m for 60sec) and have a water resistant and robust rubber armor as well as a gas purged optical tubes and are supplied with a flotation strap. They also come equipped with a floating neckstrap, which prevents the binocular from sinking should it accidentally fall into the water. As I stated in that review, for a 56mm binocular, the Bresser Pirsch ED binoculars are about as "compact" as it gets. I like this a lot better as it gives you much greater flexibility when choosing the right amount of eye-relief, which is also more than the 8x56, but I will get onto that a little later in the review. All models feature BaK-4 prisms with the special UR coating that brings even more light to your eye. ED glass is “all well and good” but can be literally worthless if the rest of the binocular’s optical system isn’t designed to take advantage of the benefits that it can offer. Because the FOV on the 8x56 is not bad, you don't feel the view is in any way particularly narrow when looking through it and if I gave you one to look through and then a few minutes later swapped it with the other, you would most likely not notice any difference.
