I thought the setting of Scotland worked well for a romance and about a plot on finding your path and purpose in life. The Highland Fling – One legend associates it as a warriors dance of triumph following a battle. It was supposedly danced over a small round shield, with a spike projecting from the centre, known as a Targe. Yet another legend links the dance to a young boy imitating the antics of a stag rearing and wheeling on a hillside; the curved arms and hands representing the stag’s antlers.

Freshly fired from her third job in a row, Bonnie St. James has lost her way. So when she and her best friend stumble upon a “help wanted” post to run a coffee shop in the Scottish Highlands, they apply on a whim. Who knows? Maybe traveling to a new place is just what she needs to figure out her next move. When I saw the vulnerable side to her later in the book, I thought this was the case. You really see her grow as a person, friend, and lover. When the friends arrive in the tiny idyllic town of Corsekelly, they instantly fall for the gorgeous Highland landscape and friendly townspeople. But Bonnie finds a less-than-warm welcome in Rowan MacGregor, the rugged local handyman. Busy wrestling his own demons, Rowan’s in no mood to deal with the quirky American - even if she is a bonny lass. According to tradition, the old kings and clan chiefs used the Highland Games as a means to select their best men at arms, and the discipline required to perform the Highland dances allowed men to demonstrate their strength, stamina and agility. The 2024 race takes place on Saturday 27th April and is a point-to-point trail ultramarathon along the southern 53 miles (85 km) of Scotland’s iconic West Highland Way trail through the Loch Lomond & the Trossachs National Park from Milngavie to Tyndrum.

A mile or so after Rowardennan, the race route will deviate slightly from the official WHW lowpath and will 'take the high road'. This will be clearly signposted and a marshal will beat the junction. A reception given in honour of Anne of Denmark at Edinburgh in 1589 included a “Sword dance and Hieland Danses”, and in 1617 a sword dance was performed before James VI. Still later in 1633, the Incorporation of Skinners and Glovers of Perth performed their version of the sword dance for Charles I whilst floating on a raft in the middle of the River Tay. John Belongs to the village of Spinningdale in Sutherland in the north of Scotland, but now lives in the Seaside town of Nairn on the Moray coast for the past 44 years. Runners are not allowed external support at any time. No support runners/pacers. Spectators may bewelcome at specific locations (this will be confirmed at a later date) The revival of Highland culture was greatly boosted when Queen Victoria discovered the road north and recognised first-hand, the magnificence of Scotland for herself. This revival saw the beginnings of the modern Highland games, with of course, Highland dancing forming an integral part. Not your regular happy ending, La Sylphide is the calling card of The Romantics, a bold and influential generation that forever changed the face of dance, with the creation of bold and beautiful illusions. Together with the Sword Dance, the Highland Fling is probably the most famous of the Scottish Highland Dances. Tullochgorm was the earliest form of Highland Fling, but towards the end of the 18th century it had undergone changes and improvements. It is thought to have evolved about 1790, when legend has it that a shepherd boy on a hillside watched stags rearing and wheeling. The boy tried to copy the stag’s antics and hence we have the graceful curve of the hands and arms depicting the stag’s antlers. In this steamy tale by USA Today bestselling author Meghan Quinn, an American searching for her purpose escapes to a Scottish town but finds more questions than answers when she meets a brooding yet handsome handyman.

I also really liked most of the characters. Rowan is one of her best heroes to date, honestly. He's burly, he's grumpy, he's protective, and he's just absolutely charming with a dash of snarky humor. I loved every bit of him with my entire being, and I loved loved loved his chapters. He was everything I want from a Meghan Quinn hero and I had a great time getting in his head. In fact, I even kind of miss him. I also loved the rest of the crew, Dakota, Isla, the twins, and the rest of the townsfolk. They were charming, they were silly, and they brought a bit of joy and levity to a story that had some depth and sadness to it. Customer reviews

Every character was lovable, even Fergus. The comradery between Bonnie/Dakota and Rowan/Isla/Leith/Lachlan were #friendshipgoals. And I'm wondering if the twins really do have some videos I could watch. 🤣 The first half was especially hard for me to get through. The author succeeded a bit too well at making Bonnie and her BFF Dakota two ugly Americans. Bonnie in particular was completely self absorbed, moving across the world at Dakota’s whim without lifting a finger to study the country or customs. This dance is now performed at dance competitions and events around the world. One goal of dancers today is to stay in the same spot throughout the dance. The Highland Fling is danced at almost all competition levels, from primary to premier. It is also performed for Highland and theory examinations. Dancers wear a kilt to perform the dance, which is in 4 The Highland Fling is the perfect rom-com. Broody hero. Excellent banter. Slow burn. Interesting side characters. I truly loved this book. Who does it? Free-Spirits, thrill seekers, outdoor enthusiasts, sports enthusiasts, adrenaline-lovers, taxi drivers, accountants, landscape gardeners, astronauts, plumbers. Get the idea? That’s right: anyone from age 10 to 110 with a sense of fun and adventure.

Emmerson, George S. (1995). A Handbook of Traditional Scottish Dance. Galt House Publications. p.50. ISBN 0969065361. Highland dancing was traditionally performed by men but is now performed by men and women. It is one of few arenas where men and women compete equally. In most competitions, the number of competing women far exceeds the number of men. I'm a bit upset because this had a ton of potential! An enemies to lovers with a grumpy hero set in Scotland. I mean, how perfect is that?? But it just didn't deliver on a few thingsIt is strictly FORBIDDEN for any participant to run in place of another runner. No one is allowed to run using another runners race number.
